What is a Council Tax band?

Every residential property in England, Wales and Scotland is placed in a Council Tax band. The band determines how much Council Tax you pay relative to other properties in your local authority area.

How do I find my Council Tax band?

Enter your postcode into the Tepilo checker, select your property from the list, and we'll show the band where available — along with your local authority.

Why can two houses in the same postcode have different bands?

Bands are set per property, not per postcode. Size, layout, type and how the property was valued on the banding date can all differ between neighbouring homes.

Is my band based on today's house price?

No. In England bands reflect estimated value on 1 April 1991. In Wales they reflect 1 April 2003 values. Today's market price does not change your band by itself.

Can I challenge my Council Tax band?

In some circumstances, yes — for example after certain changes to the property, or if you believe it was incorrectly banded. Comparing neighbours can be useful evidence, but it does not prove a band is wrong. See GOV.UK guidance on Council Tax appeals.

Where does Tepilo get Council Tax band data?

When configured, Tepilo uses a licensed property-data API that sources bands from Valuation Office Agency listings. We do not scrape the GOV.UK web checker. You can always verify on the official GOV.UK service.
