Conservation area questions
- What is a conservation area?
- A conservation area is designated for its special architectural or historic interest. Councils have additional duties to preserve or enhance the character of these areas.
- Does being in a conservation area stop me altering my home?
- Not automatically. Many improvements are still possible, but some works may need planning permission that would not be required outside a conservation area.
- What is an Article 4 direction?
- An Article 4 direction can remove specific permitted development rights, meaning planning permission may be required for changes that would ordinarily not need it.
- How accurate is this checker?
- Tepilo uses England's Planning Data service. Coverage varies and the conservation-area dataset is incomplete. Always confirm important decisions with the local planning authority.
- Does this cover Wales and Scotland?
- This MVP uses England Planning Data. Wales and Scotland have separate national datasets we can add later.
